For more than forty years, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has married the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions to the sounds and sentiments of gospel music. The result is a musical alchemy that has touched a worldwide audience. Their music have garnered praise and accolades within the recording industry, but also solidified their identity as a cultural force to be reckoned with.
A Ladysmith concert is not just an awesome vocal recital. The group entertains with dance, comedy and audience participation. Assembled in the early 1960s, in South Africa, by Joseph Shabalala, they have released over 30 albums and have sold several million records. Ladysmith Black Mambazo is part of the time honored tradition of South African Zulu male choral music, called " isicathamiya" The group came to international prominence in the 1980's with their collaboration with Paul Simon on "Graceland".
