What's New with The Port Theatre Society
New Art Exhibits in The Port Theatre Lobby
June 12, 2013 – The Port Theatre lobby has recently been adorned with art created by students at Vancouver Island University (VIU). Hanging from the ceiling are 10 three-dimensional sculptures built out of cardboard and within the theme of theatre and music. These sculptures were carefully selected from over 50 art pieces.
“Reimagining Nanaimo” is an exhibit showcasing 12 double-sided posters from 24 third year environmental graphic design students at VIU. Students were challenged to improve the downtown experience for both Nanaimo residents and visitors. Viewing the city centre without preconceptions empowered the designers to rethink and reshape the experience of being downtown, leading to these speculative window posters illustrating a series of possibilities for our city.
Through collaboration with VIU instructors Gregory Ball and Jason Gress (3D sculptures) and Patrick Foster (graphic design posters), these exhibits both brighten up the Theatre’s lobby and give students in Fine Arts courses an opportunity to put their work – and skills – on public display.
The Port Theatre Society is always looking to build and nurture community partnerships and hopes to continue partnering with the Art & Design department. Both exhibits will be up for at least the duration of the summer so next time you’re in the lobby, look around and look up.
Thank You and Farewell
We are sad to share that Dee McCuaig, The Port Theatre’s Booking Coordinator and long-time employee, will be leaving us this July. Fifteen years ago, Dee started working at The Port Theatre as a Ticket Centre clerk, selling some of the very first tickets on opening day in 1998. In 2000, she moved to the front desk in the administration office, and within a few years a new position was created and she took on the responsibilities of Booking Coordinator. To state that Dee’s contributions over the years to the growth, development and achievements of this organization has been invaluable and indispensable is an understatement to say the least. An avid and loyal supporter, Dee went above and beyond in everything she undertook and no amount of recognition and praise can suffice. With saddened hearts, deep appreciation and gratitude, and best wishes for an adventurous and rewarding future, the Board, Staff and Volunteers bid Dee farewell with the assurance that she will always be a part of this organization (and that she will visit often!).
