Island Bel Canto presents: Our Backyard
Music Composed – and Sung! – by Canadian Women
Two of Vancouver Island’s distinguished adult treble choirs join forces to present an evening of Canadian favourites – all composed by women.
Island Bel Canto will perform songs of Joni Mitchell (Circle Game), Susan Crowe (Sparrow) and Jane Siberry (The Valley). Other compositions include: a song about a Malaysian fish (Ikan Kekek); a description of the sleek Canadian mammal (Otter); also, amazing Canadian arrangements of Aurora’s Apple Tree, Eastern Owl’s Warrior, and an uplifting composition titled Light, by Montreal’s Marie-Claire Saindon (to a poem by Rabindranath Tagore).
Guest artists Encore! Women’s Choir, based in Duncan, will present their own set of Canadian favourites, including Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now.
Both choirs – with over 50 soaring voices – will sing Connie Kaldor’s Wood River, a hilarious rendition of A Place in the Choir, and a new song by Vancouver Island composer, Deborah Sumner - Our Backyard.
What better way to spend a spring evening, than to enjoy music that is uplifting, amusing and just plain fun? … all in “our own backyard”!
