Island Soul Choir Presents Hope, Love & Freedom

Sun May 28th, 2023 @ 3:00 pm

Despite all the upheaval that the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked upon us all globally since March 2020, music has remained a steadfast source of inspiration to move us through and beyond the various constraints. Even just by listening, music has remained a constant force to sustain us and bring about a positive, new future.

With our concert this May, Island Soul Choir will continue to inspire hope, love and freedom among our audience. Our conductor, Karla Mundy, has selected a repertoire of music that includes uplifting and affirming music, with soloists and small groups on most of the songs. The choir is most excited to perform this concert!

We are especially pleased to announce that Vancouver Island Chamber Ensemble, under the direction of Brian Tate, will be our concert guest. VICC is distinguished for their excellence in performing choral music from around the world, in a variety of musical periods and styles. They will perform their own set of music and then join with Island Soul Choir for the finale, under Brian’s direction of his own arrangement of a song he learned in Ghana. It is especially poignant for Island Soul Choir to have Brian join us in this concert — it marks the 10th anniversary of Brian stepping down as Island Soul Choir’s founding artistic director.

NanGo Grannies will partner once again with Island Soul Choir by selling crafts and goodies in the theatre lobby before the concert and during intermission. All proceeds raised will be used to support The Stephen Lewis Foundation to help grandmothers in 15 sub-Saharan Africa countries raise their grandchildren who have been orphaned by AIDS. We encourage our audience to take advantage of this opportunity to support a truly worthwhile endeavour.

Island Soul Choir is a community choir in its purest sense. The choir welcomes members from all over Vancouver Island, from Victoria to Port Hardy to Bamfield, as well as outlying islands including Gabriola, Salt Spring, Lasqueti and Quadra. Members don’t need to have any prior choir experience; they may not even know how to read music — they just need to want to sing. The choir’s repertoire includes gospel, spirituals, world music, blues, pop, soul, R&B… basically any type of music that touches, moves or inspires the soul. There’s definitely safety in numbers for newcomers to find their singing voice within this choir, and we are continuing to offer online-only participation for anyone who is still unsure of participating in person. The excitement to be back together again is definitely palpable!

Given that Ms. Mundy lives in Vancouver, Island Soul Choir rehearsals are scheduled only five times per session, about a month apart, unlike traditional choirs that rehearse weekly. (Multiple resources are available to members to learn the music.) Now into its 16th year, the choir continues to be hugely popular in spite of (or maybe more due to) this unorthodox rehearsal format.

Phenomenal! We’ll absolutely be back for another concert… So exhuberant!… Loved being part of the uplifting energy… We just loved it!… Thanks for such a lovely show… The singers are so enthusiastic!… Very uplifting!… Makes you want to join… Really fun to watch… Always great… Fantastic!
