The Beloved Colour
Nicholas Ross, violin & Frances Armstrong, piano
Can sound have colour? Does colour vibrate? Explore these ideas in a thrilling recital for violin and piano - a programme enhanced by meaningful projected images. Set in the beautifully resonant space of St. Andrew’s United Church in the heart of the Old City Quarter, this event invites you to see - and hear - how music and art intertwine.
Experience Brahms’ romantic Violin Sonata in G major, a Moroccan-inspired caprice of Sophie Eckhardt-Gramatté, Vaughan Williams’ evocative Pastoral, and Messiaen’s divine Louange. And, among others, of course there will be a bit of Bach.
A native of Ottawa, Nicholas Ross studied both violin and trumpet at the University of Ottawa with John Gomez and Pace Sturdevant. He performs regularly as a violinist with the Victoria Symphony and Vancouver Island Symphony. With experience teaching and adjudicating in many Canadian communities, Nicholas completed Suzuki Violin Instructor training in Chicago. He has extensive professional orchestral experience: Thunder Bay Symphony, Ottawa Symphony, Charlottetown Festival Orchestra, and North Bay Symphony. He has been featured as a soloist with the Elmer Iseler Singers and delivered a violin lecture-recital at Laurentian University. Since moving to Nanaimo, he has appeared as soloist with the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra and presented the sold out Nanaimo recital, "Bach in the Harbour". His violin was made in Toronto by Masa Inokuchi.
Frances Armstrong, originally from Surrey, BC, is a collaborative pianist known for her intuitive and sensitive playing. She holds a Master’s in Collaborative Piano from the University of Toronto, where she studied with esteemed Canadian pianist Steven Philcox, and a Bachelor’s in Piano Performance (with Distinction) from the University of Victoria. Frances has trained at prestigious programs including the Franz Schubert Institute, Toronto Summer Music, and the Music Academy of the West, and has apprenticed with l’Opéra de Montréal and the Canadian Opera Company. She has served as Head Coach at Edmonton Opera and continues to collaborate regularly with companies across Canada, including City Opera Vancouver, the Banff Centre, and Highlands Opera Studio. When she is not busy as a performer, coach, and répétiteur, she can be found enjoying a quiet life by the Pacific Ocean on Gabriola Island.
Tickets will be available at the door.
