7:30pm – 9:00pm @ the Port Theatre
We are sad to announce that Shayna Jones has cancelled her performance of Grandmama Speak for reasons beyond her control. However, we are excited to share that her shows’ composer, Rufus Cappadocia, will close the evening with Dreamscapes for Solo Cello.
Our evening will feature a short documentary film on the creation process during A Song of Years which features Tedd Robinson and was created by Genevieve Johnson. This will be followed by the live performance, A Song of Years and segue into a moving cello solo especially designed to close the evening. Thank you for your understanding and enjoy this whimsical and touching evening.

A Song of Years (2022) Tedd Robinson | Genevieve Johnson (Nanaimo) | Holly Bright (Nanaimo)
A poem in motion acknowledging the cycle of life choreographed by Tedd Robinson for Genevieve Johnson and Holly Bright, A Song of Years evokes the unwrapping of our past to reveal our presence in the present moment. It offers a metaphor of the aging body dancing as it is now, letting go of what once was, sharing a lifetime of embodied memories.

Dreamscapes for Solo Cello |  Rufus Cappadocia is a multi-lingual musician, performer, composer and recording artist of incredible range and diversity. Cappadocia has made a career of going where few cellists have gone before. His deep understanding of poly-rhythm and modal music has led to performances and recordings with a broad spectrum of musicians and dancers, such as “Bonga” and the Vodou drums of Haiti , Odetta, Urban Tap Dance Company, Ross Daly, Yacouba Moumouni, David “Fuze” Fiuzynski, The Paradox Trio , and Stellamara. He also performed with Aretha Franklin, Kasse Mady, The Peace Poets, Vishal Vaid, The Black Rock Coalition,Kif, Vernon Reid, The Campbell Brothers and many more. Cappadocia has toured throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia and has also performed in Mali Niger and Nigeria.

Ocean Roaring Anya Saugstad (Vancouver) | Cindy Kao (Vancouver)
A performance work by Anya Saugstad and Artists with live, improvised score by Cindy Kao. This site specific, live dance and violin performance, follows the stories of six women on the shore of the ocean at dusk. This no tech, environmentally conscious work, focuses on tireless and urgent movement as a means to describe distance and longing between people and the land, and directs attention to the ocean as a scarce and vital resource. It is a duet with the power of women’s bodies dancing and the power of the water.

ᓀᐦᐃᔭᐍᐏᐣ nehiyawewin  Sandra Lamouche
Inspired by the Cree language, and learning it, in relation to family and while writing syllables with my mom, the movement within them came to life as little spirits and danced across the page. I asked her to translate phrases related to times my mosom spoke Cree to me and a dream I had where I could understand. I told her that my heart aches to speak Cree. She paused and thought for a moment. She said my mosom would say it differently,  “In my heart I love Cree”. Tears welled up in my eyes. What a beautiful way to express this feeling. Turning loss into love and healing. I am learning Cree. emaci nehiyaweyan.  ᐁᒪᒋ ᓀᐦᐃᔭᐍᔭᐣ

Confluence:  Raven Spirit Dance
Confluence is a dance work that weaves our perspectives, our histories and our bodies to create somatic tapestry that speaks to the resilience of Indigenous women. We embody the
space between land and sky through play, prayer, grief and gratitude and are the living testament to the legacy that has been offered to us. Aligning our lives with the direction of the
water in a river or geese in migration, we acknowledge we are always in process, shaping and carving through landscapes, creating rhythms and discovering our stories.
