The Friends of Nanaimo Jazz Society is bringing in the New Year with a back-to-back, limited engagement series featuring Joe Farnsworth with Sarah Hanahan and the Jalen Baker Quartet.
Joe Farnsworth is one of the most highly-regarded jazz drummers on the scene today. He is known for his blazing speed, precision, musical, and melodic playing. His career includes recording over 100 CDs as leader and side-man; jazz festivals and world tours with Pharaoh Sanders, Horace Silver, Harold Mabern, McCoy Tyner, Cedar Walton, Diana Krall, Benny Golson, George Coleman, Johnny Griffin, Lou Donaldson, Benny Green, Barry Harris, Curtis Fuller…to name a few.
Joe Farnsworth will be joined by rising star, alto saxophonist, Sarah Hanahan, who was recently named one of NPR Jazz Night in America’s 30 under 30 Youngbloods. Sarah is a graduate of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the Hartt School of Music where she received her Bachelors degree in 2019, and The Juilliard School where she received her Masters degree in 2022. She has had the privilege of studying with some of the greats of our time, including Abraham Burton, Nat Reeves, Steve Davis, Billy Drummond, and Marc Cary.
Their quartet will also feature Nick Peck on piano, and John Lee on bass, and student musicians from the Wellington Jazz Academy will open the show.
You’ll feel like you’re in the front row at the Shaw Auditorium at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre – the perfect setting for this performance, with state-of-the-art sound and intimate seating.
Doors open at 6:15 – bar service available.
