Malaspina Choir brings you a selection of love songs ranging from the late 1500’s to the present day. Whether you love madrigals, opera or folksongs – perhaps Brahms, Bizet or Burns? – we are sure to perform music that warms your heart!
Our concert starts with three late Renaissance madrigals, a bit of poetic naughtiness, followed by a trip to the operatic stage with favourite opera choruses from Italian and French composers. Our folksongs are from England and Scotland plus a set of two recently composed works that celebrates our love for Canada.
The major composition of the evening is the wonderful set of Liebeslieder Waltzer Op. 52 (Love Song Waltzes), written by Johannes Brahms in 1869. Within a year, most European households with a piano in their parlour owned a copy of this composition – the popular music of its time! Scored for piano four hands, our Collaborative Pianist Jenny Vincent is joined by guest pianist Stefanie Unger as the choir romps through the highs and lows of Love.
Join us for a joyful musical celebration of four centuries of ‘love in music’.
We will abide by the Public Health measures that are in place at the time of our concert.
